Sub2R and Polycom Realpresence Desktop

Postby hamishnorton » Tue Mar 15, 2016 6:39 pm

Polycom Realpresence Desktop (P.R.D.) is a pc program that incorporates most of the features of Polycom's expensive video conferencing boxes and communicates using H.323 or SIP protocols for standard business video conferencing. I have bought a few licenses for about $70 so it is pretty cheap. Then all you need is a PC a TV and a good microphone. The problem has been to find a good not crazy expensive camera. Can one of you try the Alpha camera with P.R.D. and see how it works? P.R.D. offers a free 30 day evaluation download, so it won't cost you anything (except time!) What I am wondering is what happens when the program asks the UVC driver for a 720p30 stream (assuming it does that - it sends a 720p30 stream over H.323/SIP). My main concern is whether it downscales the 1020p60 stream or crops it. No way to know except to try. If it crops the image I will wait for the 720p camera; if it downscales it I want one now!

Depends if they do one 1080p 60FPS for £150-200?
I have some interesting pet projects in a manufacturing plant.
So employer will let me "play" for low-cost, scalable solution.
We didn't want an expensive, unflexible solutuion either.

High speed spring manufacturing (3 parts / second, but 8 motion axis , all close in within 5cm cube- so need 1080p 60FPS.
Maybe 8 off units £150-200 each? Need 1 to R&D so let me know if available in next 1-2 months,
Linking to Odroid C2 and XU4, using Python and C/C++ on linux.
Also for other stuff arising like Safety-Warning (employee lost an eye by not wearing glasses at wrong moment- so this will beep if no glasses or safety boots!), guided parts delivery, part-hole-identification etc...

Have a look at DJI rescue-drone competition - where drone finishes landing on a pickup.

Mine was a really good entry IMHO, taking examples from navy helicopter landing on a boat white-paper.
Moire pattern to align on landing. UV, IR, image-recognition, Still not selected! An event to watch...!!!
The future is linux, Arm V7/8 small embedded boards, 1gb ethernet, thanks to mobile phones.

But having a tweakable camera, would have allowed fancy vision. Bees see better with UV, we have some filter in our eyes -
but painters like Monet lost them in operations! Hence lots more blue end...
